|The 33rd Bloemfontein Rose Festival took place from 23-31 October 2009 at the Loch Logan Waterfront. The aim of the festival was to promote the "City of Roses" and passionate rose lovers from all over the country and abroad visited the festival to enjoy spectacular gardens, displays, lectures and competitions.
The term "City of Roses" was coined due to the abundance of roses planted in and around the city over the years. This practice was initiated during visits by the royal family to Bloemfontein during the early 1900's when roses were planted in their honour.
The heart of the festivities took place in the Loch Logan Waterfront Shopping complex. Activities included the Free State Rose Society's annual Cut Rose Competition, mass rose displays by various garden clubs, nurseries and Department of Parks and Cemeteries. The Mangaung Municipality also hosted a garden competition for residents and organizations. These spectacular gardens were open to the public for viewing.
